Auto insurance rate approvals, by province

In the provinces where a regulator must approve private passenger rate changes, the approvals are public. We pull every filing from the regulator's own database, weight it by market share where the regulator publishes one, and keep a renewal calculator on each page.

Why these provinces

Ontario, Alberta, New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador require prior approval of private passenger rate changes and publish the outcome by insurer, so they can be tracked filing by filing. Ontario and Alberta also publish market share, which lets us weight the averages; New Brunswick and Newfoundland do not, so their figures are simple averages across filings. Nova Scotia publishes each decision as a narrative PDF with no index of approved changes, and Prince Edward Island publishes none online; both are on the list once a reliable way to read them exists. British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba have a single public insurer whose basic rates change through a rate-review process about once a year, and Quebec does not require prior approval at all.
